With the World Famous Mai Kai Restaurant and Lounge only a few blocks away, and serving as my inspiration, a few years back I decided to attempt carving a few tikis from dead Sabal palmetto trunks. The trunks can not be decaying or can not have been struck by lightning. So, I must find trunks that have recently died.

Re: Is palm a good wood to Carve? I have carved a few Tiki's from palm trees in Florida. Only the outer layer is really "carveable". I seal the ends with an oil based sealer very well. They really soak it up. Fugus loves palm wood so make sure that what you are using has an antifungal in it. If not add it (home depot sells).
